A Guide to touring Grand Canyon

Updated: Aug 19

This is a guide to touring the Grand Canyon. Of course you can drive through or hike the Grand Canyon, but there are ways to tour Grand Canyon that will turn it into an experience to remember.

Where is Grand Canyon?

Grand Canyon National Park is in the northwest corner of the state of Arizona. The Grand Canyon is entirely in the state of Arizona but borders Utah and Nevada.

How to get to Gran Canyon to tour Grand Canyon?

I typically recommend clients visit Grand Canyon while in Las Vegas or if they are on their way to Sedona and Flagstaff, AZ.

From Las Vegas it is still about a 4+ hour drive, however you can tour the Grand Canyon with a less of a drive, more on that later.

From Las Vegas to Sedona, you could make a side trip to Grand Canyon that is about a 5+ hour drive.

From Sedona to Gran Canyon is about a 2 hour drive.

In total starting from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon, then perhaps doing an overnight in Sedona, could make it a day trip. About 6 hours in driving, factoring some time to tour Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour

Another way to enjoy Grand Canyon is via a Helicopter or Air Plane Tour. The most popular way is starting from Las Vegas. I recommend Papillon, a tour company in Las Vegas, part of the Grand Canyon Group. The Papillon Grand Celebration Tour is one of the best helicopter tours of Grand Canyon.

Why Papillon Grand Celebration Tour is the best Grand Canyon tour?

The Papillon Grand Celebration Tour covers everything you need for a Grand Canyon Tour:

  • Papillon will pick you up at your hotel from select hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and downtown.

  • You'll get flown in a helicopter to Canyon Floor, the flight takes approximately 70 minutes.

  • On you way you'll see Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and Grand Canyon West

  • Champagne is included.

  • Then you'll return back and be taken back to your hotel.

  • This tour takes about 4-4.5 hours hotel-to-hotel.

This tour is ideal for those who want to spend a half day and get away from the hustle and bustle of Vegas, you'll be back in no time for dinner, a show, or head out for the night. Papillion has additional options such as a private aircraft and a rafting to float down the Colorado River in Black Canyon.

For those who want to celebrate a special occasion such as an engagement proposal, the Private Aircraft is a way to go.

What is the Grand Canyon Skywalk?

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a great add-on for touring Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is also known as the Grand Canyon glass bridge. It is 4,000 feet into the canyon in a 10 foot wide horse show shaped glass structure.

If you want to take your Grand Canyon tour to another level, I suggestion Papillon's Grand Canyon Skywalk Getaway with Heli and Boat Tour. What does the Grand Canyon Skywalk Getaway with Heli and Boat Tour include:

  • Hotel to Hotel transportation

  • Helicopter flight over Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and views of Grand Canyon West.

  • Entry onto the Grand Canyon Skywalk (VIP front-of-the-line pass).

  • Pontoon boat cruise along the Colorado River

This is approximately 6.5 to 7 hours from hotel to hotel. Another great way to spend the day while in Las Vegas.

How to tour Grand Canyon from Sedona or Flag Staff?

If you are planning on spending time in Sedona and not in Las Vegas, similar options are available from Flag Staff touring the North Canyon vs the West Canyon. Papillion offers similar helicopter experiences from Flag Staff with their North Canyon Helicopter Tours. Sedona to Flag Staff is less than an hour away.

Which helicopter tour would you recommend?

I would definitely recommend Papillon's Helicopter Tours from Las Vegas. The Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours from Las Vegas are more extensive and offers additional options such as the Grand Canyon Skywalk tour, Pontoon boat, rafting, and a nighttime tour of the Las Vegas strip.
